Abstract

F.F. Slocomb Corporation was a manufacturer of special machinery and component parts. The Company was established as F.F. Slocomb & Company in 1898, in Wilmington, Delaware by Frank F. Slocomb (1860-1931). This collection consists largely of unidentified loose photographs of machinery produced by the company. There are six views taken on the shop floor; some of these show workers.

Historical Note

F.F. Slocomb Corporation was a manufacturer of special machinery and component parts. The Company was established as F.F. Slocomb & Company in 1898, in Wilmington, Delaware by Frank F. Slocomb (1860-1931). The name changed to F.F. Slocomb Corporation by 1940. Prior to World War II, the company was one of the largest manufacturers of leather seasoning machinery in the world. In the 1950s, the company had a business association with Design Engineering Company of Trenton, New Jersey. F.F. Slocomb Corporation was in business for ninty-nine years closing in 1987.

Scope and Content

This collection consists largely of unidentified loose photographs of machinery produced by the company. There are six views taken on the shop floor; some of these show workers. In addition, there is a mock-up pamphlet (2 copies) the company made for the trade in 1955. This pamphlet lists services offered, principal clients, accomplishments, facilities, organization, and products. Machinery that Slocomb owned and machinery that they produced for the leather (including washing , softening, de-hairing machines), plastic (including holding presses, melt indexers), and metal (including automatic profilers, drilling machines) industries is mentioned. There is also a labeled plan of the shop at 14th and Poplar Streets with the floor equipment identified. There is one unidentified outdoor photograph of twenty men in suits presumably of the Slocomb engineering staff (?).
