Historical Note

Joseph A. Speel (1810?-1891) was a bookbinder in Philadelphia. His bookbindery was located in the Cowperthwaite Building. His company, Joseph A. Speel & Co was able to provide several services such as stereotyping, electrotyping, printing and bookbinding. Speel had established partnerships with Chas. Magarge & Co., manufacturers of Wissahickon paper, King & Baird, printers located on 607 Sansom Street and George Charles stereotyper and electrotyper on 609 Sansom Street.
