Abstract

James F. Allee Jr. (1884-1956), was a lawyer and publisher from Dover, in Kent County, Delaware. This collection contains six photographic prints from the J.F. Allee papers.

Biographical Note

James F. Allee, Jr. (1884-1956), was a lawyer and publisher from Dover, in Kent County, Delaware. He was son of J. Frank Allee, Sr. (1857-1938) and Lizzie Stevens. Allee Sr. was a merchant and politician, he served in the Delaware General Assembly and as U.S. Senator from Delaware. Allee Jr. also served as Delaware State Senator (1918).

Father and son were involved in several business ventures together. Together they owned Allee Inc. which managed various rental properties. The Offices of J. Frank Allee and Son. which had interest in the Liberty Brand Canning Co. J. Frank Allee, Sr. retired from Liberty Brand Canning in 1920 and sold it to Alfred I. du Pont. Allee Sr. then opened an office building in the Munsey Building in DC and represented the Investment Banking House of McBee, Jones and Company.

Allee Jr. was editor and publisher of the Delaware State Sentinel, a weekly paper which he established in 1874. Later he was publisher for Capital Printing Co. which was established in 1921 and dissolved in 1940.

Allee Jr. was married to Elhemah J. Allee (1882-1968) and had a stepdaughter, Elhemah Forrey.

Scope and Content

This collection contains six photographic prints. One photograph depicts a bust portrait of James F. Allee, Jr. in Dover, Delaware. Another depicts a group portrait of men, possibly a school portrait, in front of an ivy-covered brick wall. Another features an exterior of a Victorian-style house with surrounding landscape. Two photographs depict men's sports teams group portraits, specifically rugby and baseball. The last features a portrait of an unidentified man, presumably James F. Allee.
