Historical Note

The Artisans Savings Bank of Wilmington, Delaware was founded on February 28, 1861. As its name implies, its initial purpose as defined in its charter was to assist working people to save money and make money available for home mortgages. Its original building was at 117 Market Street in Wilmington. During the 1920s it began opening branches throughout the city and in surrounding New Castle County. By the 1930s it had become a full service savings bank with deposits insured by the FSLIC.

Scope and Content

The Artisans Savings Bank records include financial records--ledgers (customers, depositors, mortgage and general) 1861-1960; journals (deposit and withdrawal property, regular and monthly with entries for investments and bonds) 1877-1958; day books 1873-1892, and annual and quarterly statements, 1876-1961. Minute books of the board of managers (1870-1941) document major policy decisions, investment strategies, and mortgage financing. This series also includes a copy book containing a handwritten copy of the bank's original charter (February 28, 1861) and all amendments through October 11, 1899.
