Abstract:   The Victor Talking Machine Company was an American phonograph record company. In 1901, Eldridge Johnson (1867-1945) combined his patents with those of Emile Berliner (1851-1929), incorporating the Victor Talking Machine Company in Camden, New Jersey and adopting the "His Master's Voice" trademark from Berliner. It increased in success by signing Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) and John Phillip Sousa (1854-1932) among others to recording contracts, by introducing the Victrola with its enclosed horn in 1906, and by improving recording technology. This item is an advertising brochure for Victor Talking Machine Company records.

Abstract:   The Vitale Fireworks Manufacturing Company was founded in New Castle, Pennsylvania by Italian immigrant, Constantino Vitale (1876-1949) in 1922. It became a family business as his four sons and one of his sons-in-law joined him in the management and operation of the company. In 1993, the company was reorganized and now does business as Pyrotecnico FX. This collection consists of a proof and the printing plate it was made from of a page from a fireworks catalog put out by the Vitale Fireworks Manufacturing Company of New Castle, Pennsylvania.

Abstract:   An advertising blotter is a small sheet of absorbent paper, printed with advertisement and created as a giveaway for promoting the business. The collection consists of advertising blotters from a variety of Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware businesses including a tailor, insurance companies, the Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company, stationery stores, and food suppliers.

Abstract:   A match cover or a matchbook cover is a thin piece of cardboard that is folded around a set of match sticks. Joshua Pusey (1842-1906?) was an inventor and attorney who patented match sticks in 1827, and matchbook covers in 1892. Within a short time hotels, restaurants, airlines, and all kinds of stores began advertising using matchbook covers. This collection is eight volumes of matchbook covers, each volume contains approximately 330-570 matchbooks. The matchbooks are graphic advertisements for various businesses, services, or products. The industries most represented are hotels, restaurants, clubs, and bars. There are a large amount of matchbooks from banks/insurance companies, automobile companies, airlines, food stores, drug stores, clothing stores, among others.

Abstract:   Collectors of railroad memorabilia often also collected postcards. Railroad postcards generally picture stations, engines, bridges, route scenery, railcar interiors, and accidents. Some collectors sought specific railroads. This collection is over a thousand postcards related to railroads. The collection has been arranged into two series: Railroad stations and Railroad cars and trains. This is an artificial collection assembled from various donors.

Abstract:   ‘Sponsored film’ defines variety of motion picture productions funded by businesses, organizations, or governments that dictated the point of view, audience, and intent of the film. Industrial or business films are a subgenre of sponsored films with content that marketed products and ideas, touted a particular company or industry, trained employees, and explained manufacturing or transactional processes around the creation and sales of products and ideas. The Sponsored and industrial Motion Picture Film Collection at Hagley is an artificial collection compiled by curators that includes single motion picture films or small sets of films acquired via purchase or donation.

Abstract:   Samuel Vauclain (1856-1940) was an engineer, inventor, and was president of Baldwin Locomotive Works from 1919 to 1929. This collection contains album pages with snapshot photographs recording a month long Canada-U.S. transcontinental railroad voyage taken in July and August 1922 by Mrs. and Mrs. Samuel Vauclain, their daughter, and granddaughter in their private car, "Manhattan."

Joshua Pusey (1842-1906?), an inventor and attorney patented matchbook covers in 1892. Within a short time hotels, restaurants, airlines, and all kinds of stores began advertising using matchbook covers. This is a small collection of matchbook covers consists advertising hotels, restaurants, banks, elections, products, and organizations. Most of the matchbook covers are from Texas and New Mexico with a few coming from other states.
