Abstract:

World's Fairs or International Expositions are large-scale exhibitions that highlight technology, agriculture and other innovations of national or cultural significance. The New York World's Fair took place in Flushing Meadows, Queens from April 30, 1939 to October 31, 1940. The collection consists of two sets of different postcards from the 1939 New York World's Fair. One set by Underwood & Underwood shows miscellaneous scenes at the fair, primarily buildings. The other set is comprised of photographs of the sculpture at the Fair, printed by the Meridien Gravure Co., Meridien, Connecticut.

World's Fairs or International Expositions are large-scale exhibitions that highlight technology, agriculture and other innovations of national or cultural significance. The 1964 New York World's Fair was held in Flushing Meadows, New York from April 22, 1964 to October 18, 1964, and then again from April 25, 1965 to October 17, 1965. The theme was "Peace Through understanding." This small collection consists of four blank postcards showing scenes from the New York World's Fair in 1964-1965. The set is titled, "Official world's fair post cards by Dexter, West Nyack, N.Y."

The Association Against the Prohibition Amendment (AAPA) was the leading organization working for the repeal of prohibition in the United States. This is a small collection of postcards or stationary cards containing anti-prohibition slogans or quotes. The items are all undated but likely date from 1930 to 1933.

Carol Litchfield collection on the history of salt

Abstract:

This collection includes ephemera, postcards, films, advertisements, photographs, documents and objects relating to the history of salt. The collection was assembled by Carol Litchfield (1936-2012), a biologist and biochemist with an interest in halophiles and salt history. These items document the history and development of salt manufacturing throughout the world. Historic and modern methods of salt harvesting are depicted from various areas around the world.

Additionally, this collection includes documentation of Carol’s personal research and participation in salt related conferences and programs.

Chicago Railroad Fair photographs and postcards

Abstract:

The Chicago Railroad Fair was the last exposition that featured railroads as its theme. It marked the centennial of the arrival of railroads to Chicago and their role in westward expansion. The exposition was held in 1948 and 1949 in Chicago. This collection consists of souvenir postcards and miniature photographic views of the buildings and locomotives at the Fair.

The Chicago Railroad Fair was the first exposition after the Second World War and the last exposition that featured railroads as its theme. It marked the centennial of the arrival of railroads to Chicago and their role in westward expansion. This is a postcard of the narrow gauge Deadwood Central train that carried visitors around the fairground.

Eastern Air Lines operated from 1927 to 1991 and was one of the Big Four airlines (others included United, Delta, and American) that for almost fifty years dominated commercial airline travel in the United States. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont the company began with the production of gunpowder. The postcard consists of a view of the DuPont Powder Yards in Wilmington, Delaware.

Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is considered one of the most important and influential furniture designers and architects of the early twentieth century, inspiring both modernism and Art Deco movements. She was among the vanguard of the International Style in her use and interpretation of geometric forms and industrially produced materials. This collection is a boxed set of postcard-size reproductions of black and white photographs of houses, rooms, and objects designed by her.

Exposition Internationale of 1937, was held in Paris, France from 25 May to 25 November. The full title of the exhibition was, Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne, which translates to the International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life. The viewbook contains ten postcards of views of the Exposition Internationale held in Paris in 1937. These show both aerial views and images of the exteriors of buildings

Francis Bannerman Son was a major purveyor of military goods to sportsmen and collectors in New York City over three generations. The collection consists of miscellaneous photographs, negatives, postcards and ephemera pertaining to the weapons and military memorabilia business run by Francis Bannerman and to Bannerman's philanthropic and leisure activities.

Hotel Varadero Internacional, Cuba postcard

The Hotel Varadero Internacional, built in 1950, was next to Xanadu, Irenée du Pont's (1876-1963) estate that was built in Cuba around 1930. The postcard gives a black and white photographic view of the entrance to the driveway to the Hotel Varadero, with the hotel in the background.

This is his personal collection of travel ephemera that he collected from across North America. These materials primarily cover the United States’ most popular tourist spots with an emphasis on the Northeast region of the United States.

John Margolies collection of travel photographs and postcards

Abstract:

John Margolies (1940-2016) was an American photographer and architecture critic with a fondness for novelty architecture. This is his personal collection of postcards and photographs from across North America. These materials primarily cover the United States’ most popular tourist spots along with various businesses. There is heavy coverage of the Northeast region of the United States, where Margolies lived most of his life. Postcards are primarily from the first half of the twentieth century, and photographs primarily span circa 1890-1920s. Postcards cover a wide range of subjects from famous attractions to local businesses, and photographs are almost entirely local businesses, many being interior views of family owned businesses with their owners. Few objects are contained within the collection, including signs from local businesses and a scrapbook from the honeymoon of an unidentified couple. A small amount of transparencies and negatives conclude the collection, which were used for the planning of some of Margolies books. It is important to note that this collection does not contain John Margolies original photography, except for the few postcards that advertise his exhibits.

Marie Delphine du Pont (1916-2009) was the great-great-grandaughter of E.I. du Pont (1771-1834), the founder of the DuPont Company. Her papers consist of letters and postcards between du Pont and her cousin, Irene Sophie du Pont May (1900-2001).

Maurice D'Onofrio collection of Johnson family postcards

Abstract:

The patriarch of the Johnson family of Cape May New Jersey was Eldridge Johnson (1838-1929), a prominent merchant, trustee of the Presbyterian Church, and president of the Cape May Saving Fund and Building Association. The Johnson family of Cape May resided at 225 Congress Place, a house which was moved to 33 Perry Street in the 1970s and is today known as the Pink House. This collection consists of postcards from a states in the United States and a few from Canada. The postcards depict landscapes, street scenes, prominent buildings and monuments, as well as Presbyterian Churches from a variety of cities. These postcards were sent to members of the Johnson family between 1910 and 1949.

New York waterworks photograph and ship "Mohican" postcard

The Waterworks in Cooperstown, New York was built on the side of a mill in 1870, with an addition built in 1890. The ship "Mohican" was built circa 1900 and scrapped in 1936. This collection consists of two items: one black and white photograph of Waterworks, Cooperstown, New York and black and white postcard view of ship "Mohican."

Pennsylvania Railroad stations and Whitney Dam, North Carolina postcards

Abstract:

This is a small collection of three postcards. Two postcards have images of Pennsylvania Railroad stations in Greensburg and Swissvale, Pennsylvania. The third postcard is an advertisement for Pennsylvania Cement Co. showing the Whitney (N.C.) Dam. The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was chartered in 1846 to completing an all-rail road across the state. In 1857 the Pennsylvania Railroad purchased the old Main Line system and eventually brought the entire line from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh under one management.

Collectors of railroad memorabilia often also collected postcards. Railroad postcards generally picture stations, engines, bridges, route scenery, railcar interiors, and accidents. Some collectors sought specific railroads. This collection is over a thousand postcards related to railroads. The collection has been arranged into two series: Railroad stations and Railroad cars and trains. This is an artificial collection assembled from various donors.

Sexual harassment in the office postcard

Abstract:

The history of sexual harassment in America dates back to slavery and domestic servitude in colonial times. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement and groups like them, along with labor activists, lobbied to protect women from sexual harassment. This collection is a postcard with an illustration showing a male employee with a female employee on his lap in an office setting.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad in the nation began operating in 1827. It spanned as far north as New York and as far west as St. Louis and Chicago. This is a small collection of souvenir postcards that were published for the The Fair of the Iron Horse, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's centenary exhibition and pageant of 1927. It was held near Baltimore, Maryland.

Union Stock Yards postcards

Chicago's Union Stock Yard was the meatpacking district for Chicago, Illinois. In 1864, a consortium of nine railroad companies purchased 320-acres of swamp land in southwest Chicago to build a new more efficient stockyard. The result was that Chicago's Union Stock Yard and Transit Company opened Christmas Day 1865. This collection consists of five postcards (one used) showing scenes from the Union Stock Yards.

William Shinn & Company, Inc. photographs

Abstract:

The firm of William Shinn & Co. installed stamped sheet-metal ceilings, cornices, skylights, roofing, and ductwork and employed about a dozen workers and apprentices. The company was founded in 1907 in Wilmington, Delaware by William Shinn (1883-1947), a tinsmith and cornice worker, and his brother John A. Shinn (1885-1955). This collection contains mages of the William Shinn shop with attached office and another view of their rooftop sign on the Shinn warehouse. There are interior and exterior views of the house of customer.

Wilmington is Delaware’s largest city and can be found where the Christina River and the Brandywine Creek meet near the Delaware River. The city prospered throughout the Industrial Revolution, but the period of rapid economic growth came with the Civil War. By 1920, the population had reached over 110,000 residents. Wilmington experienced significant population loss after World War II as the suburban areas grew and I-95 dissected some of the city’s more stable neighborhoods. These items are postcards are of miscellaneous views of Wilmington, Delaware sites.

Women fishing Illustrations

Abstract:

Angling is a method of fishing by means of using an angle or fish hook. The hook itself can be dressed with lures or bait to attract the fish. F. Earl Christy (1883-1961) was an illustrator whose early works glorified the society college girl. After the college girl craze ran its course, he painted more mature men and women, movie stars, and political figures in his romantically idealized style. These three items show women with fishing poles. One of the postcard illustration's artwork is by F. Earl Christy.
