Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours letters to Philippe Nicolas Harmand

Abstract: Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. At the onset of the French Revolution, he served as a member of the Assemblée Nationale Constituante, where he allied himself with the moderate Girondist faction. After the leader of the Jacobin movement, Maximilien Robespierre (1758-1794), took power, du Pont was arrested in July 1794, but he escaped execution. On January 3, 1800, accompanied by his sons, he arrived in America. This small collection consists primairly of letters from du Pont de Nemours to Philippe Nicolas Harmand (1759-1839), director of pensions under the Empire, then first clerk for the Public Debt from 1814 to 1821. Harmand was the tutor of du Pont de Nemour's sons and a loyal family friend. Harmand brought du Pont de Nemours food during his period of concealment. These letters include references to financial and business affairs, as well as personal and family news.

This small collection consists of two letters to Charles de Pougen (1755-1833) of the Institut de France, as well as a microfilm reel of a selection of letters and documents pertaining to Antoine Lavoisier's trial and execution and du Pont de Nemours' political and intellectual career.

Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein (1766-1817), known as Madame de Staël, was a writer, philosopher, and politically engaged woman who survived the French Revolution and was exiled multiple times by Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821).

Abstract: Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator. In 1802, he held various government posts under Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). In 1803, he aided President Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) in negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase, a land deal transferring ownership of more than 530 million acres of territory to the United States from France. The principal item of this collection is a letter to James Monroe, minister plenipotentiary to negotiate the Louisiana Purchase, dated May 7, 1803. The letter is encased in a leather bound portfolio containing the original handwritten French letter, a typed English translation, and three other items.

Abstract: William Gouverneur Ramsay (1866-1916) was a civil engineer for railroads and explosives corporations, including Repauno Chemical Company, Great Northern, and DuPont Company. His wife, Caroline “Lena” Johnston Canby (1872-1958) was interested in cultural and educational institutions and traveled extensively. The Ramsay family papers primarily consist of William G. Ramsay's personal and business papers, as well as his family's personal papers which primarily consist of correspondence, much of it between William Ramsay and Lena Ramsay prior to and after their marriage. the letters describe social life in Wilmington, literature, courtship and marriage, household administration, family life, child rearing and health.

Abstract: Robert Lenox Belknap (1848-1896) was a capitalist and financier of New York City. The Robert Lenox Belknap papers are a fragment saved by his descendants. The papers include Belknap's private letterbooks for the final years of his career (1892-1895), although 33 earlier volumes have been lost. They include both business and personal correspondence and give a good picture of the life of a New York financier of the second rank.

This collection consists of two letters, one from Samuel Francis du Pont to Foote in regards forwarding misdirected mail, as both were commanding ships in the China Sea. The second letter is from du Pont's father to a Naval Officer about Samuel Francis du Pont's experience aboard a ship.

This collection primarily consists of the papers of Gabrielle Josephine Crofton (1873-1952) and Mary Ethel Crofton Hunt (1875-1962), daughters of Gabrielle Shubrick Crofton (1835-1894) and Robert E.A. Crofton (1834-1898). It includes diaries, autograph book, notebook, and letters.

Abstract: The Soo Hardware Company was a full-service hardware wholesale and retail store located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It carried a complete line of building materials, plumbing and electrical supplies, stoves and furnaces, major and minor domestic appliances, housewares, sporting goods, and bicycle and auto parts. The records consist of inbound correspondence received between the years 1911 and 1918. The bulk of the correspondence consists of sales letters and invoices from manufacturers and wholesalers, covering the wide range of semi-finished and manufactured goods sold by the Soo Hardware Company. A large number appear to be unsolicited mailings from salesmen, while others document a long working relationship.

Abstract: Irene "Sophie" Sophie du Pont May (1900-2001) was a churchwoman, a philanthropist, and a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) who founded the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) in 1802. The E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The collection consists of Sophie du Pont May's family correspondence and financial correspondence as well as correspondence between her father Irénée du Pont (1876-1963) and his older sister Louisa d'Andelot du Pont Copeland (1868-1926).

Abstract: Sophie Madeleine du Pont (1810-1888) was the youngest daughter of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont (1775-1828), and the wife of Samuel Francis du Pont (1803-1865). In the letter to Mary Ann (Hogg) Brunot (1822-1899), du Pont thanks her for a sermon Brunot sent and reflects du Pont's concern with religious and domestic matters.

Abstract: Sophie Madeleine du Pont (1810-1888) was the youngest daughter of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont (1775-1828), and the wife of Samuel Francis du Pont (1803-1865). The letter from du Pont to Theophilus Parsons Chandler (1807-1887) concerns her trip to White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, with her husband Eliza J. Schlatter (1809-1892).

The two letters to Henry Ferris (1855-1941), a printer in Wilmington, Delaware, concern a religious tract and a subscription to the Wilmington Weekly.

Abstract: William Corbit Spruance (1873-1935) was an electrical engineer and Vice President in Charge of Production at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. His wife, Alice Moore Lea Spruance (1876-1967), was a member of a Wilmington, Delaware, flour-milling dynasty. Spruance family miscellany contains threes letters, two regarding a forestry bill and one a thank you letter. Additionally, there are two copies of a newspaper article titled "This was the Civil War".

Savery, primarily related to his papermaking machinery ventures, and twenty-nine diaries of Sarah Pim Savery.
