Historical Note

The DuPont Company began the manufacture of smokeless powder at its new works at Carney's Point near Penns Grove, New Jersey, in the early 1890s. The Technical Department was created early on to work with scientists at the DuPont Experimental Station and Eastern Laboratory of the Repauno Works to develop new products, maintain quality control, and improve products and processes.

Scope and Content

The records are a selection of the files of the Technical Department preserved by a former Technical Superintendent. Greatest emphasis is on the start-up period (1906-1910) and the two World Wars.

Series I. Works administration, contains a sampling of records dealing with the operation of the works as a whole. It includes general correspondence, organization charts, notices of appointments, and minutes of the plant's general staff and committees responsible for dealing with operating and research problems. There are also minutes of meetings between the Chief Chemists at Carney's Point and other DuPont smokeless powder plants and the Burnside Laboratory. Other meetings are concerned with plant safety and employee recreation. Also included are biographical notes on C.F. Burnside and photographic copies of site maps of the Carney's Point Works.

Series II. consists of written descriptions of manufacturing processes used within the works, covering various types of smokeless powder.

Series III. describes the analysis and testing of raw materials used in the works, including sodium nitrate, amyl acetate and diphenylamine.

Series IV. deals with actual production, including production schedules, inventories, labor coast and quality control data, ballistic tests and correspondence regarding government contracts.

Series V. deals with the training of supervisors and laboratory technicians, including the outlines for several training programs.

Series VI. deals with plant safety, including accident investigations, safety inspections, safety manuals, and training sessions. Also included is a manual covering World War II blackouts.

The balance of the records deal with laboratory procedures and reports dealing with the chemistry of smokeless powder. Series VII. consists of written descriptions of basic laboratory methods, while Series VIII. consists of specific analytical investigations. Series IX. describes individual pieces of laboratory equipment and their uses. Series X. and XI. consist of technical reports and studies on various aspects of nitrocellulose chemistry.
