Historical Note
The D.B. Jones Company, and its successor, Edith N. McConnell, were caterers and confectioners in Wilmington,
Delaware. Davis E. Jones began his confectionery business at his home in 1880. His son, Davis G. Jones, joined the firm and eventually assumed the business after the death of his father, circa 1905.
Edith N. McConnell (1880-1968) was a confectioner and caterer in Wilmington, Delaware from the 1920s through the 1950s. Her catering business was located at 841 Market Street under the name "Miss McConnell Caterer, Confectioner." She took over the D.B. Jones Company in 1921 and left in 1957.
Scope and Content
Records for the D.B. Jones Company include a recipe and daybook, 1879-1891, and customer account books, 1891-1914. Records for Edith N. McConnell include an address and birthday book, 1931-1956; and an employees' list containing social security numbers, and the amount of social security taxes with dates and amounts paid, 1940-1942. Additional records include recipe books and miscellaneous bills.
The records identify individual and corporate customers, and describe types of food prepared for and purchased by clients, who were generally entertaining guests.
