Historical Note

Hughes Helicopters was a manufacturer of civilian and military helicopters. The company was founded in 1947 as a unit of the Hughes Aircraft Co., an aerospace and defense contractor established by Howard Hughes (1905-1976) in 1934.

In 1955, the company reorganized and Hughes Helicopters was placed as a division under the Hughes Tool Co., with a focus on producing light helicopters.

In 1972, Hughes sold the tool division of the Hughes Tool Company and restructured the remaining holdings as the Summa Corporation. The aircraft division became the Hughes Helicopter Division, Summa Corp; it reverted to Hughes Helicopters, Inc. in 1981.

In 1983, an agreement was reached for McDonnell Douglas to acquire Hughes Helicopters, Inc. from the estate of Howard Hughes; it was completed in 1984.

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists primarily of article reprints that publicize Hughes Helicopters and trade literature for some of the company's competitors before entering the market.

There are six article reprints. "Whirlybirds for Easy Flying," by Norman Cavender in The Farm Quarterly, 1965-1966, focuses on Huges Heliocopters. "Trucking Business is Hopping," by George R. Reiss in The AOPA Pilot (AOPA stands for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association), in 1966 is about using helicopters for transporting goods. "Hughes Revolutionizing Helicopter Technology: Army OH-64 Sets 23 World Records - Rotorwing First 500 Mph Heliocopter," by Hughes Tool Company, in Verti-Flite, American Heliocopter Society, Inc., in 1966 is included. Two articles focus on the Model Hughes 500 helicopter, which was a civilian version of the company's military Hughes OH-6 light observation helicopter: "Breakthrough in Helicopters? The Hughes 500," in Flying Review International, 1966 and "Flying the Hughes 500," by the editor in Helicopter World, 1967. "Cheese it... The COPters!" by Tom Stimson in Popular Mechanics , in 1967 is about helicopters used in law enforcement.

There is one product sales informational booklet, entitled "Hughes 300: 3-Place Helicopter," circa 1965, and one issue of the employee newsletter "Hughes News" (vol. 26, no. 21), dated October 20, 1967.

The material related to competitors includes a 1944 booklet about "The Swift" business plane manufactured by the Globe Aircraft Corporation, Fort Worth, Texas; a 1944 Bendix Helicopter model G and company information brochure; a "Rocket 185" brochure by Johnson Aircraft, Inc., Fort Worth, Texas, with accompanying sales letter from Florida Rocket Aircraft Sales Co., MacDill Field from 1945; a Silvaire brochure, by Luscombe Airplane Company, Dallas, Texas; and an Aeromatic self-acting variable pitch propeller, Koppers, Co. flier, both undated, (approximately 1950s).
