Historical Note

The National Negro Licensed Beverage Association (NNLBA) was a trade organization that promoted fellowship among Black business owners in the community, professionalism, commercial uniformity, and distribution of beneficial educational information. Members of the association were Black-owned bars, taverns, and package liquor stores. The NNLBA was organized in 1959 to increase the economic power of the Black community and enhance its bargaining power within the industry.

The national organization was headquartered in Washington, D.C., and had regional chapters in various locations around the country. The NNLBA held annual conventions, and chapters held regular meetings.

Scope and Contents

This small collection of NNLBA, Western Pennsylvania Branch records consists primarily of agendas and meeting minute notes of meetings that took place between March and July of 1961; they are a mixture of typescript and handwritten. The typescript agendas cover the various committees: Publicity, Program, Membership, Public Relations, Legislative, Purchasing Power, and Constitution and By-laws, as well as old and new business. Often they seem to discuss which distributors are charging for beer. One page is a blank form requesting that each member sign their name and the price they pay for premium and local beer for discussion. One meeting mentions a possible boycott due to lack of work, while another is a list of amounts of local beers.

There is also a typescript list of eleven participating taverns, nine located in Pittsburgh and the others in nearby suburbs; a printed booklet containing the articles of incorporation and by-laws of the national organization dated April 1960; and a pencil sketch of the logo "Negro Tavern Owners Assc. of Western Pennsylvania."
