Historical Note

The Pennzoil Company is a large oil-producing, refining, and marketing company established in 1913. Its largest product is synthetic motor oil made from natural gas. Pennzoil traces its origins back to South Penn Oil Company and Zapata Petroleum. In 1955, the company was acquired by South Penn Oil, a former Standard Oil branch headquartered in Oil City, Pennsylvania. In 1963, South Penn Oil merged with Zapata Petroleum, and the company was named Pennzoil.

The company moved its headquarters to Houston, Texas, in 1965. In 1968, United Gas Corporation merged with Pennzoil through a leveraged buyout because United Gas was larger than Pennzoil.

The motor oil brand was acquired in 2002 by Shell plc, a British multinational oil and gas company.

Scope and Contents

This item is a single volume containing four parts; it was intended to provide new employees with an orientation to the company and the oil and gas industry. The first part is titled "The United Gas Business: An Introduction" and was prepared by the company's Training Department in collaboration with many United Gas employees. This section includes information about the United Gas System, transmission and distribution, and company organization charts. The second part is titled "How Pennsylvania Motor Oils Are Made...," a text prepared by the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association, Oil City, Pennsylvania. The pages and figures detail the oil refining process. The third part is titled "Pennzoil Natural Resources Operations" and provides an overview of oil and gas exploration, drilling, production, refining, and gas transmission. This section also covers mining operations for sulphur, copper-molybdenum, and potash. The last section is titled "Introduction to the World of Pennzoil United, Inc., a Natural Resources Company" and covers marketing, manufacturing, oil and gas operations, gas transmission, and gas distribution.

Laid into the front of the binder are two notes dated 1979 regarding borrowing and copying the volume.
