Abstract

Peter K. Baumgarten (1926-2000) was a chemical engineer for the DuPont Company for thirty years who continued as a consultant for the company after his retirement. He worked as a chemical engineer for DuPont and Westinghouse, retiring from the Savannah River Site in 1993. He also taught math and physics part-time at the University of South Carolina (USC)-Aiken. This small collection consists of papers, speeches, notes, presentations, and articles that Baumgarten wrote while working at DuPont as a chemical engineer and then as a consultant. His research focused on ion exchange for decontamination and waste removal from radioactive sources such as the Savanah River Plant.

Biographical Note

Peter K. Baumgarten (1926-2000) was a chemical engineer for the DuPont Company for thirty years who continued as a consultant for the company after his retirement. Born in Berlin, Germany, to Marianne Steiner Baumgarten (1897-1987) and Friedrich Baumgarten (1894-1978), he came to the United States in 1940. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1946 and then received his advanced degrees from the University of Delaware in 1953 and 1956. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked as a chemical engineer for DuPont and Westinghouse, retiring from the Savannah River Site in 1993. He also taught math and physics part-time at the University of South Carolina (USC)-Aiken. He married Doris Faye Lerner Baumgarten (1930-2022) in 1954; the couple had three daughters.

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of papers, speeches, notes, presentations, and articles that Baumgarten wrote while working at DuPont as a chemical engineer and then as a consultant. His research focused on ion exchange for decontamination and waste removal from radioactive sources such as the Savanah River Plant. Included are also documents noting Baumgarten's employee objectives and accomplishments.
