Biographical Note
John Oscar Skiles (1895-1960) was a longtime employee of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, where he worked as an analyst in the Metallurgical Department of the company's Sparrows Point, Maryland, plant, beginning in the 1920s until his retirement in 1960. The Bethlehem Steel Corporation was the number two steel producer in the United States between 1916 and 1984. For a time it was also the largest shipbuilding firm in the world.
Scope and Contents
This small collection consists of one folder of materials related to Skiles' employment at Bethlehem Steel. It includes photographs depicting Skiles and colleagues in laboratories and in front of a sign reading "Open Hearth Office." Also included are reports related to open-hearth furnaces and slag, some authored by Skiles; raw data and graphs; correspondence with the Vanadium Corporation of America regarding vanadium in slag; work schedules for the Furnace Laboratory; meeting minutes of the Sub-Chemists Committee of the Metallurgical, Treating, and Testing Committee; and a request for a raise for analysts in the chemical laboratories. The documents date from 1929 to 1938, while some of the photographs depict Skiles as an older man.
