Abstract

Charles L. Huston, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware on December 28, 1923, as a general holding and investment company for the family of Charles Lukens Huston (1856-1951), an executive and part owner of the Lukens Steel Company of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The company's first board meeting was in 1924, and it was dissolved in 1939. This collection includes five volumes, as well as paper correspondence regarding the business endeavors and financial matters of Charles L. Huston, Inc. The files in this collection document several stages of the company's development during the 1920s and 1930s, including meeting minutes, the acquisition of stock shares, and the liquidation process.

Historical Note

Charles L. Huston, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware on December 28, 1923, as a general holding and investment company for the family of Charles Lukens Huston (1856-1951), an executive and part owner of the Lukens Steel Company of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Offices were maintained in Wilmington, Delaware, as well as Coatesville and Philadelphia. Beginning with the first board meeting in February 1924, three members of the family constituted the entire board, filling the offices of president, vice president, and secretary; they held all shares in the corporation: Charles L. Huston (1856-1951), Annie S. Huston (1863-1952), and James Stewart Huston (1898-1971). In the 1927 reorganization, Charles L. Huston Jr. (1906-1982) and Ruth Huston (1899-1982) also became shareholders. The five family members constituted the board when the corporation was dissolved on December 28, 1939.

Biographical Note

Charles L. Huston (1856-1951) was an executive in the family business, Lukens Steel, and was active in religious and civic affairs. Charles Lukens Huston was born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, on July 8, 1856, the second son of Dr. Charles Huston (1822-1897) and Isabella Pennock Huston (1822-1889).

Huston began at Lukens Steel as a bookkeeper in 1875 and later pursued other roles in business. He was put in charge of the puddling mill in 1879, the plate mills in 1882, and the Open Hearth Department in 1891. He became a partner in 1879, and the firm was restyled by Charles Huston & Sons in 1881. Upon incorporation as the Lukens Iron & Steel Company in 1890, C.L. Huston became second vice president.

Charles L. Huston married Annie L. Stewart (1863-1952) in 1895. They were the parents of five children, three of whom lived past infancy. These three children, James Stewart Huston (1898-1971), Ruth Huston (1899-1982), and Charles Lukens Huston, Jr. (1906-1982), each became involved in the business endeavors of Charles L. Huston Incorporated.

Charles L. Huston took an active part in religious and civic affairs. He was Director of the Poor for Chester County from 1907 to 1940, in which capacity, he was greatly involved in the work of the Chester County Home and Hospital for the Insane. He was involved for most of his life in the Young Men's Christian Association and in the organization of the Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the National Association of Evangelicals, vice president of the World's Christian Fundamentals Association (1920-1946), and a strong supporter of the Church's foreign missionary work and the Prohibition movement. He died at Coatesville, Pennsylvania, on March 14, 1951.

This collection includes five volumes, as well as paper correspondence regarding the business endeavors and financial matters of Charles L. Huston, Inc. The correspondence also contains legal correspondence with the law firm of Rambo, Rambo, and Mair. Additionally, there are general accounts, meeting agendas and resolutions, stock certificates, tax returns, dissolution papers, and miscellany concerning investments. The files in this collection document several stages of the company's development during the 1920s and 1930s, including meeting minutes, the acquisition of stock shares, and the liquidation process.
