Historical Note

Charles I. du Pont & Co. was a woolen manufacturer. The company's roots begin with the establishment of the Du Pont, Bauduy & Co. in 1810, as the partnership between Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), Raphael Du Planty (1776-1854), Victor du Pont (1767-1827), and Peter Bauduy (1769-1833). On February 25, 1815, this partnership dissolved, and Victor du Pont and his son Charles I. du Pont (1797-1869) formed the partnership of Victor & Charles I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. The firm continued until the death of Victor du Pont in 1827 when it became Charles I. du Pont & Co.

In 1839, Charles I. du Pont & Co. acquired the mill property of Dixon & Breck, a woolen company that had been organized four years earlier. This mill, also situated on the Brandywine and known as Rokeby, was added to the original Louviers operation under the management of William Breck. Rokeby and Louviers were turned over to E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in 1854 and 1856, respectively, when Charles I. du Pont & Co. ceased operations.
