Biographical Note

Abel Farwell (1813-1863) was a commission merchant from Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of Beatrice Carter Farwell (1788-1839) and Levi Farwell (1776-1840). In 1844, he married Susan Walker Bartlett Farwell (1822-1902). The couple had two children who died in infancy.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains two of Abel Farwell's diaries. Farwell documents his personal trip, called a "pleasure tour," in 1833, during which he visited Washington, D.C. from July 1st to August 5th. The second diary describes a business trip to St. Louis in April and May of 1851. Both diaries describe various modes of transportation, with references to canal boats, steamers, and trains, and offer commentary on social customs in both cities.

The diaries are microfilm typescripts (151 pages) edited by Arthur H. Cole (1889-1974). Cole was a professor of Business Economics at Harvard University and served as librarian of the Business School's Baker Library from 1932 to his retirement in 1956.
