Historical Note

Sun Company is a petroleum processor and distributor incorporated by Joseph Newton Pew, Sr. (1848–1912), with his eldest son Arthur E. Pew (1875-1917), under the laws of New Jersey in 1901. This company succeeded the Sun Oil Company (Ohio), which Pew and partner Edward Octavius Emerson (1834-1912) formed in 1890. Pew bought out Emerson's stake in 1899. The company established a strong marketing base with national and international customers and purchased land in southeastern Pennsylvania on the Delaware River at Marcus Hook. Over the next few years, this site was developed as a refinery to which Texas crude oil could be sent by ship. The company was known as Sun Company Inc. from 1886 to 1920 and 1976 to 1998 and Sun Oil Co. from 1920 to 1976. In 1968, Sun merged with Sunray DX Oil Company. In 1998, Sun Company, Inc. became Sunoco, Inc. Energy Transfer Partners, an energy company based in Dallas, Texas, and purchased Sunoco in 2012.

At its peak, the refinery at Marcus Hook processed 175,000 barrels of crude oil per day and was the second-largest oil refinery in the northeastern United States. In 2011, Sunoco announced that it was exiting the refining business when the Marcus Hook site was idle. The refinery was acquired in 2012 by Sunoco Logistics, which merged with Energy Transfer Partners in 2017, and converted into a hub for storing and processing natural gas liquids.
