Scope and Contents
Manchester's papers provide an indication of the role company magazines played in the advertising strategy of large companies in the first half of the twentieth century. The small collection primarily comprises office files from Manchester's decades as editor of DuPont Magazine within the Advertising Department, although there are a few publications from the Tippecanoe Securities Company, for which Manchester worked prior to joining DuPont. The DuPont files include general information on advertising, copywriting, company magazines, and the history of DuPont Company advertising. This includes notes compiled for and drafts of multiple reports Manchester wrote on the history of DuPont Company advertising. Many of the files are reference files of newspaper and magazine clippings on subjects such as scientific and industrial research, general DuPont Co. happenings, the du Pont family, plastics, aviation, explosives, and the chemicals industry. There are references to company publications, an early index to DuPont Company literature, bulletins to the stockholders (1924-1942), and company promotion policy. During World War II, Manchester was involved in publicizing the use of DuPont explosives in combat in the magazine, as reflected in the file of War Department photographs showing ordnance production and explosives in use. There are also two files of congratulatory comments from various companies, universities, and individuals that Manchester received upon the publication of the 1927 anniversary issue of DuPont Magazine. There is scattered correspondence, primarily comments or suggestions for the magazine. The collection also includes typescripts of speeches by Manchester and letters received upon his retirement.
