Biographical Note

The Du Pont family is a prominent Delawarean family descended from Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817), a French political economist, writer, publisher, and public administrator who immigrated to America with his sons, Victor Marie du Pont (1767-1827) and Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), in 1800. Du Pont de Nemours and his sons established the commission house of Du Pont de Nemours, Pere et Fils & Cie. in New York. In 1802, he founded E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his younger son, Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical research and manufacturing company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. The Du Ponts purchased the Eleutherian Mills site on the bank of the Brandywine River just north of Wilmington, Delaware. Between 1802 and 1921, Eleutherian Mills was a gunpowder mill site used to manufacture explosives.

The brothers settled near one another and raised their families; their children maintained close relationships. Many Du Pont descendants studied chemistry and were often involved in the DuPont Company. Others remained in the Brandywine area and were active in the Delaware community.

Scope and Contents

This small set of materials contains business and personal papers. The collection is organized into three series: Correspondence, business, and personal documents; Copies and extracts of correspondence and other documents; and Illustrative materials.

The Correspondence, business, and personal documents series includes personal letters between family members, promissory notes, and business correspondence. Of particular interest are Brandywine Manufacturers Sunday School subscription lists, notes on imports into France (1769-1782) prepared by or for Du Pont de Nemours, and a memorandum by Victorine du Pont Baudy about her father's imprisonment in 1794. There are several newspaper clippings; a number of these concern the Du Pont family and E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.

The Copies and extracts of correspondence and other documents series is mainly composed of transcripts of various authors' biographies of Du Pont de Nemours. There are also transcripts of family letters in other repositories made for P.S. du Pont and a translation of a treatise on the sulphur regions of Sicily.

The Illustrative materials series includes sketches and drawings, scale drawings and diagrams, and plats of land. The drawings include sketches of the first powder mills and plans of the Eleutherian Mills mansion, local scenery and landscapes, and a cartoon, "The Fathers of the Brandywine," depicting the struggles among the mill owners over water rights. There is also an ink and wash portfolio of drawings showing Du Pont powder mills and machinery circa 1810 to 1830 and plats of property at the Brandywine Works.
