Biographical Note

Walter S. Carpenter, Jr. (1888-1976) was an industrialist, philanthropist, and former President and Chairman of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company.

Carpenter was born on January 8, 1888, in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1906 and entered Cornell University. He left in 1910 in the middle of his senior year when the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. hired him to go to Chile in connection with the nitrate business. After several years, Carpenter came to Wilmington, Delaware, as the Director of the Development Department. He was then elected as Director and Vice President in 1919 and named Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee in 1926. Carpenter was President of the company from 1940 to 1947 and Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1948 to 1962, after which he was appointed Honorary Chairman of the Board.

Carpenter was a director or trustee for many institutions during his lifetime and always held a fondness for his hometown of Wilkes Barre and the schools he attended there. His philanthropic activities covered many facets of his interests, and he generously gave to colleges and libraries in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Carpenter was interested in the welfare of not only his own family but also the family of his wife, Mary Wootten Carpenter (1888-1949), who was a native of Laurel, Delaware. While working in South America, he developed a lifelong friendship with Elias Ahuja (1863-1951), who set up a foundation called Good Samaritan, Inc. After Ahuja’s death, Walter S. Carpenter, Jr. and his son, W. Samuel Carpenter, III (1915-1973) helped manage the philanthropic business. Walter S. Carpenter, Jr. died in Wilmington on February 2, 1976.

Letters to family and friends primarily concern personal matters, including trips abroad, special announcements, and education updates.
