Biographical Note

Alfred Victor du Pont (1900-1970) was a partner in the Wilmington, Delaware, architectural firm of Massena and Du Pont, and he was the third child of Alfred I. du Pont (1864-1935) and his first wife Bessie Gardner du Pont (1864–1949). He served in the Marines Corps during World War I, and after studying at Yale University, he worked as a chemist at various E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company sites. He left the company in 1928 to study architecture at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Returning to Wilmington, he started an architectural partnership with Gabriel Massena (1902-1945), whom he had met in Paris. During World War II, du Pont served in various capacities: as a naval lieutenant aboard the USS Alabama, in the Office of Strategic Services in North Africa and Washington, D.C., and with the War Production Board. Although Massena died in 1945, du Pont continued the business after the end of the war. The firm designed both the Sunken Garden and the memorial Carillon Tower at du Pont's father's estate, Nemours. Other projects included the Edison Tower at Menlo Park, New Jersey; the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill at Smyrna, Delaware; associate architects for the design of the Alfred I. du Pont Institute at Nemours.
