Historical Note

Guyencourt Nurseries, Inc. was a Delaware landscape nurser set up by three young horticulturists, William E. (1896-1967) and Mary M.R. Phelps (1898-1977) and G. Guy Nearing (1890-1986), in 1929. The operation was located at the Phelps residence, on land which belonged to Mrs. Phelps' family. Plant materials included Nearing's Arden Nursery stock since his account book dating from 1923 was continued under Guyencourt headings in 1929. A variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials were grown and retailed for home landscaping by the company, with a specialty of hybrid rhododendrons propagated from cuttings. Guyencourt Nurseries, Inc. was established during the depression era in the United States and collapsed in 1935.
