Founded in 1843 as a partnership between Nathaniel Hanson (1816-1864) and Richard Emerson (1801-1872), the firm was located at Alton, Illinois. The company was succeeded by the Alton Machine Shop and Foundry, operated by Nathaniel Hanson, in the early 1850s.
