Abstract

John J. Raskob (1879-1950) was a prominent business and political figure in the early twentieth century. A top financial executive for both E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and the General Motors Corporation, Raskob was heavily involved in politics, serving as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1928 to 1932. Meyer Blumenthal (1888-1951) founded Blumenthal Brothers, a Philadelphia chocolate company. In this letter, Raskob urges Blumenthal to join the American Liberty League.

Biographical Note

John J. Raskob (1879-1950) was a prominent business and political figure in the early twentieth century. A top financial executive for both E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and the General Motors Corporation, Raskob was heavily involved in politics, serving as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1928 to 1932. He was also a well-known Catholic noted for his charitable giving.

Meyer Blumenthal (1888-1951) founded Blumenthal Brothers, a Philadelphia chocolate company. He was a charter member of the National Confectionery Salesmen's Associated.

Scope and Contents

In the typed and signed letter urging Blumenthal to join the American Liberty League, Raskob reviews his own rise from humble origins, his belief in the sanctity of property rights, and urges Blumenthal to join the League in opposing the leftward turn taken by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.
