Biographical Note

Joseph M. Rule (1922-2017) was a chemist and senior community affairs consultant in the Public Affairs Department at the DuPont Company. At DuPont, he performed outreach to public contingencies and led troubleshooting endeavors when issues arose. He studied medical care delivery; headed a prison industries task force that developed a program to improve inmates' work habits and job skills; and worked to improve Delaware's public education system, both economically and administratively.

Rule graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1945 and a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1949. He joined the DuPont Company in 1949 as a chemist and engineer in the Grasselli Chemicals Department's Research Division in Cleveland, Ohio. He transferred to the research laboratory at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1950, becoming a group leader in 1951 and research supervisor in 1953. He then was a sales representative for DuPont's Grasselli Chemicals Department. In 1958, he became an industrial marketing analyst in the Marketing Research Division of the Development Department.

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of materials from Rule's work while in the Marketing Research Department. The materials include market research reports, DuPont Elastomers architectural files, and advertisements.

There are three market research reports on printing plates from 1957 to 1958. The reports examine usage, development, and advertising.

The advertisements binder consists primarily of color hue and saturation proofs and two DuPont Company bulletins.

The DuPont Elastomers architectural files are a compilation of information on rubber products and materials available for use by the construction industry from 1967 to 1970. The files serve as a reference catalog and a preliminary source of design information on synthetic rubber products. The volumes contain data on window seals, roofing, flooring, coatings, fastener adhesives, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical, structural, and joint sealing.

"Of Gardens and Gators," a booklet produced by DuPont's Environmental Group, contains nine brief stories demonstrating the DuPont Company's commitment to the environment. There is an accompanying letter from Joseph M. Rule to ACES participants providing a copy of the booklet in 1981.
