Abstract

F. Weber & Company, Inc. is an American manufacturer and supplier of artists' materials. Ernest Gustav Weber (1888-1965) was owner Frederick Theodore Weber (1845-1919)'s son. After their father's death, Weber and his brother, Frederick William Weber (1890-1972), were business partners running the supply store. This item is Ernest Gustav Weber's journal. The journal contains income and expenses from 1905 and 1906. There are also some lists of correspondence, addresses, and travel information.

Historical Note

F. Weber & Company, Inc. is an American manufacturer and supplier of artists' materials. Originating in 1853 as Scholz & Company, a sales agency, the company evolved through a series of growth partnerships to become F. Weber & Company in 1887 under the leadership of its owner, Frederick Theodore Weber (1845-1919). After Weber's death, his sons Ernest Gustav Weber (1888-1965) and Frederick William Weber (1890-1972) incorporated the company and renamed it F. Weber Co., Inc. Fred Weber Jr. became technical director and continued to serve in this role until his retirement in 1967. After the death of Ernest Weber in 1965, F. Weber Co., Inc. was purchased by Visual Art Industries of Brooklyn, New York. In 1980, Dennis Kapp acquired the company, and, contining to honor the tradition of the Weber family, renamed it Martin/F.Weber Co. The company is still in operation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Scope and Contents

This item is Ernest Gustav Weber's journal. The journal contains income and expenses from 1905 and 1906. Flipping the journal around, it contains lists of letters received and letters written between 1904 and 1906. After a small section of blank pages, there are notes and addresses. The items laid in to the journal include an outline of a trip to Germany from 1904 to 1905, chapter notes written in Greek, a train ticket stub, a men's clothing store trade card, a postcard to Ernest (in German), a suitcase and travel items invoice, a steamship timetable, a flower, and a letter to Ernest (in German).
