Historical Note
DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Company was a pharmaceutical research and manufacturing plant formed in 1991 through the joint venture of the DuPont Pharmaceutical Company and Merck & Co., a leading competitor in the pharmaceutical industry. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, the parent company of DuPont Pharmaceutical Company, and Merck & Co. each had a 50 percent interest. The joint venture lasted only seven years. In 1998, the DuPont Company purchased Merck & Co.’s shares and changed the name back to the DuPont Pharmaceutical Company.
In October 2001, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company purchased the DuPont Pharmaceutical Company.

The records consist of items taken from the files of Josephine K. Baker, clinical research coordinator. They are primarily the sort of materials issued to employees, including annual and quarterly reports (1991-1997); "Meteor," "Galaxy," and "Telescope" employee newsletters (the last focusing on political externalities); articles concerning company history; memos issued to employees; "Summit" awards for outstanding employees; and the company's United Way campaigns. There are corporate policies and procedures manuals covering such topics as safety, e-mail policy, records retention, business ethics, and diversity in the workplace, as well as a file on "Science Commitment" seminars held in 1992 and 1993.
