Biographical Note

A. Sonnin Krebs (1877-1969) was a chemical engineer and president of the Krebs Pigment & Chemical Company.

August Sonnin Krebs was born July 29, 1877, in Denmark, to Henrik Johannes Krebs (1847-1929) and Ebba Victoria Kruse (1849-1879). The family came to the United States in 1880, settling in Delaware. His father formed the Krebs Pigments and Chemical Company around 1902 and built a plant in Newport, Delaware, a few years later. When Henrik Krebs retired from the company in 1921, August Krebs took over as president. The company was acquired by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1929.

Krebs graduated from the Wilmington Friends School and Cornell University in 1900 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was affiliated with a number of professional groups, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, and the Franklin Institute Clubs.

Krebs owned Breidablik Farm and directed its operations which included an ice cream business. He sold most of the farmland around 1946. The farm was started in the early twentieth century as a Guernsey cow breeding establishment.
