Biographical Note

Guy B. Taylor (1888-1972) worked at the DuPont Company, where he specialized in the oxidation of ammonia, the method of contact catalysis, and the synthesis of acetylene.

Taylor was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 5, 1888. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Princeton in 1913. During his doctoral study, Taylor worked at DuPont's Eastern Laboratory from 1911 to 1913 and then spent six years at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. He returned to DuPont in 1919, where he remained until his retirement in 1953.

In his early years at DuPont, Taylor specialized in the oxidation of ammonia, the method of contact catalysis, and the synthesis of acetylene. Later he studied the size and shape of polymer molecules, particularly the size of nylon molecules. Taylor was the author of many technical papers and the holder of several patents.

He died on February 18, 1972, at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.
