Historical Note
The Granite Manufacturing Company of Maryland was a textile factory on the Patapsco River. It was incorporated on March 7, 1844. The company constructed a four-story granite cotton factory on the Patapsco River in Howard County, across Ellicott City. The factory was relatively small, with 132 looms, 4,000 spindles, and about 150 workers. It was totally destroyed in a flood in 1868 and not rebuilt.
