Ivan Gubelmann (1886-1968) was an organic chemist specializing in dyestuffs. He was born in Meilen, Switzerland, on July 7, 1886, and came to the United States in 1912. He worked first for Monsanto (1912-1916) and then became chief chemist for The Newport Company, which manufactured dyestuffs under license from German manufacturers. In 1930, The Newport Company spun off its dyestuffs and chemical division to the Newport Chemical Corporation, with Gubelmann as vice president in charge of manufacture and technical director. On August 14, 1931, the Newport Chemical Corporation sold all its assets to E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, where they became part of the Organic Chemicals Department.
