Abstract

Frederick G. Singer (1897-1971) was a manager for the Tariff Division of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company's Development Department, working out of the foreign office in Paris, France. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. This small collection consists mostly of organizational charts and lists of officers and products of the DuPont Company and the Grasselli Chemical Company, as well as the products of their competitors, between 1936 and 1937.

Biographical Note

Frederick G. Singer (1897-1971) was a manager for the Tariff Division of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company's Development Department, working out of the foreign office in Paris, France. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company.

Frederick George Isaac Singer was born in Paighton, Devonshire, England, to Emilie L.H.A. Maigret (1872-1953) and Franklin M. Singer (1870-1939). He was the grandson of the founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Co., Isaac Merritt Singer (1811-1875).

During World War I, Singer served in the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps with the French Army. He then worked as a civilian assistant in the U.S. Naval Attaché Office of the U.S. Embassy in France, and then as assistant trade commissioner.

Singer began working for the foreign office of the DuPont Company in 1924 and became manager of the Tariff Division in 1949. He retired in 1958. He was a recognized expert on tariffs and international trade, and served on several significant tariff committees.

Singer married Simone A. Puget (1890-1983) in 1919, and the couple had one son. They lived in Greenville, Delaware, from 1936 to 1961, and also in Paris.

Scope and Contents

This notebook was kept by Frederick G. Singer of the Paris Tariff Division office of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company between 1934 and 1945. It contains mostly organization charts and lists of officers and products of the DuPont Company and the Grasselli Chemical Company, as well as the products of their competitors, between 1936 and 1937. The book also contains a printed table, "Shipments of Rubber from the Primary Markets and Restrictions Quotas," for the years 1934 through 1936. Inserted at the back of the book are scattered papers from the 31st National Foreign Trade Convention, the menu for a 1945 dinner in honor of Henri Bonnet, French ambassador to the U.S., and the National City Bank's confidential bulletin no. 339 (1944), containing a summary of currency exchange regulations between the U.S. and other countries of the Western Hemisphere.
