Biographical Note
James L. Lovell (1896-1984) worked for the DuPont Company as an exhibition marksman in the Sporting Powders Division.
Lovell was born in Portland, Tennessee, on June 30, 1896. He attended Vanderbilt University; however, Lovell left college to serve in the Navy during World War I. Upon his return to the United Stars in 1919, Lovell became the Police Chief of Portland and Undersheriff of Sumner County for three years. After serving as undersheriff, Lovell was hired by the DuPont Company as an exhibition marksman in the Sporting Powders Division. In 1928, Lovell was transferred by DuPont to serve as a salesman for Ventube mine ventilation as well as the Western representative of the Construction Section of the Explosives Manufacturing Department. In 1950, Lovell began publishing “America’s Builders,” which profiled contractors and projects in heavy construction. He retired from DuPont in 1959.
Lovell began preaching with the Churches of Christ in 1915. He helped many churches in Western states and helped, directly and indirectly, hundreds of missionaries. He continued this work until he died in Southern California in 1984.
