Historical Note
E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834); the company began with the production of gunpowder. The du Pont’s purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just North of Wilmington, Delaware. Throughout the 1920s, the emphasis shifted towards the development of synthetic fibers and other materials. The DuPont Company celebrated its 150th anniversary on July 18, 1952, on the site of the original Eleutherian Mills with the unveiling of a monument to founder E.I. du Pont.
Scope and Contents
This small collection consists of materials issued as part of the 150th celebration of DuPont Company, including badges, invitations, programs, newsletters, etc. Also included are two acknowledgments of sympathy cards from Frank S. Allmuth upon the deaths of Lammot (1880-1952) and Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954). There are some materials related to the planning of the event, the ceremony, and policies for employee attendance. The files include official reports from the Executive Committee and memoranda to department heads about the celebration and policies. Included are detailed itineraries and remarks made by executives. Materials document planning and execution of the activities.
