Abstract

George Levitt (1925-), a DuPont Company chemist working at the Experimental Station, discovered sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides in 1976 after two decades of experimentation. This collection consists of six of Levitt's laboratory notebooks documenting milestones in herbicide discovery.

Biographical Note

George Levitt (1925-), a DuPont Company chemist working at the Experimental Station, discovered sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides in 1976 after two decades of experimentation. The first commercial SU herbicide, "Glean," was registered to DuPont in 1982. It marked one of the most important advances in crop protection technology, reducing the amount of herbicide per acre by 99 percent. Dr. Levitt was awarded the 1993 National Medal of Technology by President Clinton for his contribution to the development of environmentally friendly herbicides.

Scope and Contents

The records consist of six of Levitt's laboratory notebooks representing key milestones in the discovery of SU herbicides.
