Abstract

J. Edward Norton (1925-2009) worked for the DuPont Company in the Textile Fibers Department as a technical marketing specialist. The notebook he maintained includes company technical memoranda and bulletins covering the processing of Nylon, Orlon, and Dacron, the production of wool-polyester blends, and the carding, spinning, knitting, and finishing of artificial fibers.

Biographical Note

J. Edward Norton (1925-2009) worked for the DuPont Company in the Textile Fibers Department as a technical marketing specialist.

Norton was born in Penns Grove, New Jersey, to Kathryn P. Morton (1899-1966) and James Gill Norton (1898-1979). Raised in Carneys Point, he studied chemical engineering at Drexel and later graduated from Philadelphia College of Textiles.

During World War II, Norton served in the Army in the 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion, landing in Normandy, and fighting in Northern France, Belgium, and Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, received the Bronze Star of Valor, and attained the rank of Second Lieutenant.

Norton worked for the DuPont Company as a technical marketing specialist in the Textile Fibers Department. He spent five years in Geneva, Switzerland, before returning to Wilmington and finally retiring from the company in 1985.

Scope and Contents

A looseleaf notebook kept by J. Edward Norton (1925-2009) of DuPont's Nylon Division, in which he collected company technical memoranda and bulletins covering the processing of Nylon, Orlon, and Dacron, the production of wool-polyester blends, and the carding, spinning, knitting, and finishing of artificial fibers.
