Biographical Note
Joseph Dugan (1766-1845) was a Philadelphia merchant of the early nineteenth century. He is most likely the Joseph Dugan, who was a partner with John Savage (1765-1834) in Savage & Dugan. Savage & Dugan was a Philadelphia shipping and underwriting company formed in 1794. It operated ships ranging from Philadelphia to Puerto Rico.
In 1816, Dugan became a director in the Bank of the United States. Dugan died May 15, 1845, and is buried at Saint Mary's Catholic Churchyard in Philadelphia.
Scope and Contents
The record is a receipt book of Joseph Dugan's (1766-1845) household expenses, including fuel (cordwood), specialty foodstuffs such as wine, and furniture. Many of the receipts were issued in connection with the construction of a new house on Spruce near 13th Street in Philadelphia. The volume provides interesting detail on the lifestyle and living expenses of a second-tier Philadelphia merchant in the Jacksonian era.
