Biographical Note

Victorine Elizabeth du Pont (1825-1887) was the daughter of Alfred Victor du Pont (1798-1856), senior partner in E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and Margaretta Elizabeth (Lammot) du Pont (1807-1898). She attended the boarding school of Charles Picot in Philadelphia from 1840 to 1841. In 1849, she married Peter Kemble (1825-1887), son of William Kemble (1795–1881), the company's New York business agent. The couple had five children: William (1849-1874), Meta (1852-1933), who married Lockwood De Forest (1850-1932), Mary Charlotte (1854-1910), who married Henry Adolphus Simonds (1855-1904), Peter (1857-1900), and Richard Law (1865-1925). She resided in New York until her death in 1887, just a month after her husband.

Scope and Contents

The Victorine Elizabeth du Pont (1825-1887) papers contain miscellaneous material related to the du Pont family, including bills for her trousseau, autograph album, and correspondence. The correspondence are photocopies of originals and include two letters likely from Meta (Kemble) de Forest (1852-1933) to Lockwood de Forest (1850-1933), Henry Grant de Forest to Margaretta Elizabeth (Lammot) du Pont (1807-1898), and Margaretta Elizabeth (Lammot) du Pont to Meta (Kemble) de Forest. The letters primarily relate to family matters, but Henry Grant de Forest's letter also references religion and Gustave Schelle's book on du Pont de Nemours.
