Abstract

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company commonly known as the DuPont Company. It was established in 1802, and began by manufacturing gunpowder, later moving to chemical compounds. The foundations for the Engineering Department were laid in 1902. The department’s purpose was to design and construct high explosives plants, design powder machinery, and create extensions to existing plants. These records consist of seven large blueprint maps showing property lines, utilities, and buildings in the area of the company's Brandywine Works in Wilmington, Delaware.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company commonly known as the DuPont Company. It was established in 1802, and began by manufacturing gunpowder, later moving to chemical compounds. The foundations for the Engineering Department were laid in 1902. The department’s purpose was to design and construct high explosives plants, design powder machinery, and create extensions to existing plants. The Engineering Division of the High Explosives Department within the DuPont Company was consolidated with the Black Powder Engineering Division in 1911 to become the Engineering Department.

Scope and Contents

The records consist of seven large blueprint maps showing property lines, utilities, and buildings in the area of the company's Brandywine Works, comprising the Hagley Yard, the Upper Yard, the Lower Yard, and the surrounding area. Most of the site is now the property of the Hagley Museum and Library.
