Abstract

Eleutherian Mills is the house built by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), above his gunpowder mills, the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. It served as a home to the du Pont family for generations, the last being Louise du Pont Crowninshield (1877-1958). The collection contains material related to the restoration of the home prior to Crowninshield occupying it. Also included are materials related to a road to the Eleutherian Mills and Nemours residences, repairs to the iron bridge across the Brandywine, and description of E.I. du Pont's garden.

Historical Note

Eleutherian Mills is the house built by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) above his gunpowder mills, the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. It served as a home to the du Pont family for generations, the last being Louise du Pont Crowninshield (1877-1958). The house was completed by August 1803, expanded in 1843, and restored in the 1920s. The home is now part of Hagley Museum and Library.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains material related to the restoration of the Eleutherian Mills residence prior to being occupied by Louise du Pont Crowninshield (1877-1958). Material includes blueprints of surrounding land, repairs to the house, taxes, bills for labor, scenic wallpaper (A.L. Diamont & Co., Philadelphia), description of old trees, and others. The main correspondent to H.A. du Pont (1838-1926) is John W. Barnes, builder and engineer. Most of the correspondence is to and from H.A. du Pont, with a few to Louise Crowninshield.

Also included is material related to the construction of a road to the Eleutherian Mills and Nemours residences, repairs to the iron bridge over the Brandywine, correspondence and accounts with John W. Barnes about repairs to Eleutherian Mills, and a description of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont's (1771-1834) garden at Eleutherian Mills by Victorine (du Pont) Foster (1849-1934).
