Biographical Note
Alice Belin du Pont (1872-1944) was a member of several social clubs and became very involved with philanthropic work. She was the daugher of Henry Belin Jr. (1843-1918) and Margaretta Lammot Belin (1846-1927) of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Her father was president of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. of Pennsylvania. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a bachelor of arts degree in 1892. Prior to her marriage, she was a member of several social clubs and performed some chairty work in Scranton. She married Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) in October 1915; they were first cousins and longtime friends. There were no children by this marriage.
After her marriage, du Pont became very involved with philanthropic work, creating the Nileb Foundation through which most of her charitable donations were made. During World War I, she worked with the Delaware chapter of the Amerian Red Cross preparing surgical supplies. She was interested in horticulture and was a life member of the American Orchid Society, serving as vice president in 1924 and 1925. Du Pont opposed Prohibition and was president of the Delaware chapter of the Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform (WONPR) from 1931 to 1934. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Wilmington and Du Pont Country Clubs, the Garden Club of Wilmington, and the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts. She was also a patron of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera of New York.
