Biographical Note

Belle M. Sherman (1851-1930) was a New York writer, translator, and editor who edited the women's page of the New York Herald, and wrote for magazines such as Colliers and the old Cosmopolitan under the byline of Mrs. B.M. Sherman or Belle M. Sherman.

Not a lot about Isabelle Magee is known. She was born July 22, 1851 in New York and married first James Annette (1849-1889) and had at least four children: Isabelle, Mary, Walter, and Estelle. She married second, Walter Rothschild Sherman (1851-) in 1887 and they had at least one child: Edythe Minott Sherman (1888-1971) (alternatively spelled Edith). The couple went through a bitter divorce in 1894. Isabelle died October 29, 1930 in the Bronx, New York. She lived with her daughter, Edith White, at the time.

Walter Magee Annette (1874-1955) was born July 16, 1874 to James Annette (1849-1889) and Isabelle Magee (1851-1930). Annette left home around the age of nineteen and worked for seven years at a bank in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During 1901 he worked for C. R. Johns & Co., a land business at Austin, Texas. After Johns died, he worked for the American Push Button Telephone Company in New York City. Here he was recruited by J. Amory Haskell and he became a dynamite salesman for the Laflin & Rand Powder Co., which by merger later in 1902 became part of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Annette was based in Birmingham but spent much of his time on the road in the mining districts of Appalachia. During his travels he met Amanda Jane Nuckols (1878-unknown) of Lexington, Kentucky, whom he married on June 7, 1905. After the court-ordered breakup of the DuPont Company in 1912, Annette went with the Hercules Powder Company. He was New York office manager from 1915 to his retirement in 1945. He died in New York on August 22, 1955.

Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of incoming letters to Belle M. Sherman (1851-1930), arranged by correspondent. The bulk of the letters are from her son by her first marriage, Walter Magee Annette (1874-1955). Annette's letters give a particularly colorful account of his early business career and social life. Of particular interest are the many descriptions of life on the road as a "drummer." The letters illustrate the clash between his urban Irish Catholic upbringing and his rural surroundings, bouts of religious guilt, and the stress of an impending interfaith marriage to a member of the Bluegrass aristocracy.

There is also a smaller group of letters from Jane Nuckols (1878-unknown), her daughter-in-law, from before and after her marriage. One of the most candid presents the difference between Catholic and Protestant views on family planning. A single letter from a reader of Sherman's column discusses her decision to forego factory work for a career as a lady's maid and her dissatisfaction with the pace of "man's work."
