Historical Note

Route 1 is a major north-south U.S. highway extending from Florida to Maine. The plat depicts a small portion of Route 1 between Hamorton and the Anvil Inn, including P.S. du Pont's (1870-1952) Longwood Gardens.

Hamorton, now a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, is a village primarily of brick, fram, and stone residences constructed between 1780 and 1930. The original village laid out in the 1830s, was significantly expanded upon between 1928 and 1930 by P.S. du Pont. The expansion was filled with eighteen detached examples of "company housing" for employees of Longwood Gardens. Hamorton, in addition to being a commercial center, was a center of abolitionism in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

The Anvil Tavern, formerly known as Welch's Tavern, gained notoriety during the Battle of the Brandywine. A skirmish broke out in the early morning hours of September 11, 1777. The building was demolished in 1917, but an anvil sits on the site to mark its existence.

In 1906, P.S. du Pont purchased the former Peirce's Park, a popular arboretum and picnic park. Du Pont purchased more surrounding lands, developed a series of formal display gardens, constructed an extensive network of conservatories, and opened the property, now known as Longwood Gardens, to the public.
