Scope and Contents
The papers consist of about 110 items, primarily correspondence between Gabrielle Josephine Shubrick Crofton (1835-1894) and her husband, Robert Crofton (1834-1894), and her mother, Julia du Pont Shubrick (1806-1882). Of particular interest are the portions cover the years 1864 to 1872 and include letters written from army posts in the Dakota Territory, where her husband was stationed, giving details of life, references to "Indians", and a good picture of Army days on the frontier. Also included are an autograph album of her daughter, Julia du Pont Crofton (1866-1948), scrapbooks of news items and poetry, and a volume containing copies of poems originally owned by her mother and dated 1822.
