Biographical Note

Gabrielle Shubrick Crofton (1835-1894) was the daughter of Irvine Shubrick (1797-1849) and Julia du Pont (1806-1882), and the wife of Colonel Robert E.A. Crofton (1834-1898).

Gabrielle Josephine Shubrick was born on July 20, 1835. She was the granddaughter of Victor du Pont (1767-1827) and great-granddaughter of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours(1739-1817). On January 7, 1864, Shubrick married Robert Erkine Anderson Crofton, an army officer. The couple had six children, five of whom survived: Julia du Pont (1866-1948; married Charles Carroll Walcutt), Maude (1869-1903), William Moore (1870-1907; married Emilie le Barbier), Gabrielle Josephine (1873-1952), and Mary Ethel (1875-1962; married Henry Jackson Hunt).

Crofton died December 3, 1894.

Scope and Contents

The papers consist of about 110 items, primarily correspondence between Gabrielle Josephine Shubrick Crofton (1835-1894) and her husband, Robert Crofton (1834-1894), and her mother, Julia du Pont Shubrick (1806-1882). Of particular interest are the portions cover the years 1864 to 1872 and include letters written from army posts in the Dakota Territory, where her husband was stationed, giving details of life, references to "Indians", and a good picture of Army days on the frontier. Also included are an autograph album of her daughter, Julia du Pont Crofton (1866-1948), scrapbooks of news items and poetry, and a volume containing copies of poems originally owned by her mother and dated 1822.
