Abstract

Joseph N. Borglin (1899-1976) was a chemical engineer in the Agricultural Chemicals Division at Hercules Powder Company. The records include typescripts for two works by Borglin: "Treatise on Vinsol Resin" and "Treatise on Rosin" both from the 1940s.

Biographical Note

Joseph N. Borglin (1899-1976) was a chemical engineer in the Agricultural Chemicals Division at Hercules Powder Company.

Borglin was born in Minnesota on March 24, 1899. He earned his B.S. degree in chemical engineering at the University of Washington in 1924. From 1926 until his retirement in 1964, he worked at the Hercules Powder Company. He specialized in research on terpenes and resin acids, and received over 120 patents for his work. Early in his career, Borglin was transferred to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he became chief chemist of the Hercules plant. He transferred back to the Experimental Station, located in Kenvil, New Jersey, before joining the Research Center in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1931.

Between 1933 and 1944, Borglin served as assistant group leader and group leader in the Naval Stores Department in the Experimental Station. He was in operations, 1944 to 1946; in technical service and development, 1946 to 1955; and in the Agricultural Chemicals Division, speciality algicides, 1955 to 1964.

Borglin died November 15, 1976 in Wilmington, Delaware.

Scope and Contents

The records consist of typescripts of two works by Joseph N. Borglin (1899-1976), "Treatise on Vinsol Resin" in 1943 and 1946 editions, and the two-volume edition of "Treatise on Rosin" from 1945. One of the chapters in the latter work is titled "History and Manufacture of Naval Stores Products," and includes photographs of the various work processes involved in extracting pitch and pine tar.
