Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888) was an American illustrator known for his illustrations in works by well-known nineteenth century authors. The collection includes a microfilm copy of his 1853 account book which records his work for publishers.

Biographical Note

Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888) was an American illustrator known for his illustrations in works by well-known nineteenth century authors. Darley was a self-taught and prolific artist who started out as a staff artist for a Philadelphia publishing company. After moving to New York, his work began to appear in magazines such as Harper's Weekly and in books by various publishers.

He worked with a number of nineteenth century authors including Washington Irving ("The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle"), Edgar Allan Poe, James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Clement Clarke Moore, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Additionally, he designed bank notes and bonds for the U.S. government.

Darley died in 1888 at his home in Claymont, Delware.

Microfilm of Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888) 1853 account book containing records of his work for publishers. Darley illustrated editions of Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, and Henry W. Longfellow. Original is privately owned.
