Abstract

George Y. Swickard (1906-1958) was a medical doctor involved in industrial medicine who worked with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. During World War II, Swickard worked as a medical supervisor with the DuPont Company at various locations, including atomic research projects at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and at Hanford, Washington. This collection consists of certificates, newsletters, pamphlets, and souvenir programs amassed by Swickard, mostly in the course of his work for DuPont.

Biographical Note

George Y. Swickard (1906-1958) was a medical doctor involved in industrial medicine.

Swickard was born April 10, 1906 in Steubenville, Ohio to George Swickard (1876-1969) and Ruth Yeagley (1882-1913). He married Lucile Stockdale (1906-2001) in 1932. The couple had two children. He died November 22, 1958 in Orange, Texas.

During World War II, Swickard worked as a medical supervisor with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company at various locations, including atomic research projects at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and at Hanford, Washington. In 1945, he was transferred to the DuPont plant in Orange, Texas, where he eventually established an obstetrics, gynecology, and surgery practice.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of material amassed by Swickard, mostly in the course of his work for the DuPont Company. Items include: biographical data; a 1944 issue of DuPont's SAFETY NEWS; souvenir program from christening of the bomber, Hanford airport (1944); War Department certificate to Dr. Swickard for services rendered during the atomic bomb project; issues of the Hanford Plant newspaper, the SAGE SENTINEL (1944-1945); pamphlets, "Highlights of Hanford--Work for Victory," "Here's Hanford," and "Dear Anne--a letter ... about life at Hanford," the latter written for female employees and describing local living conditions.
