Historical note

Rubbermaid Incorporated is an American manufacturer and distributor of many household items. It was incorporated in Ohio as the Wooster Rubber Company on May 19, 1920. Originally a manufacturer of toy balloons, it suffered a severe loss of business in the early Depression. In 1934, James R. Caldwell (1897-1977) joined the company as president and brought with him a line of colored rubber dustpans and drainboards that he had developed and marketed in New England under the brand name "Rubbermaid." The company greatly expanded its line of colored rubber housewares, adding vinyl covered wire products like coathangers and dish racks in the late 1940s and all-plastic goods in the mid-1950s. It was renamed Rubbermaid Incorporated in 1957.
