Biographical Note
William J. Barnard (1867-1957) was a merchant and general storekeeper of Westtown, Pennsylvania, and later of Newark, Delaware. He was born April 30, 1867, to Enos Barnard (1840-1935) and Catherine Jackson (1837-1877). He married Susan T. Barnard (1869-1966) in 1897. They had three daughters.
From about 1896 to 1898, Barnard was the partner of O.A.Sandusky in Sandusky & Co. Barnard dealt mainly in apples, potatoes, butter, eggs, and other farm produce. In July 1898, Barnard established the Barnard Company at Westtown, manufacturing something called "The Magic Sponge." This venture appears to have been short-lived, and he returned to dealing in produce. About 1905, Barnard moved to Newark, Delaware, and switched to develop a lumber business, which he operated for nearly fifty years.
Barnard died September 7, 1957, in Newark, Delaware.
